Tournament Play

“Tournament Play” is a term used by Little League to describe the District, Provincial, National and International series of games which start in July.  Some leagues refer to their teams that compete in these Playdowns as the “A team”, “All-Star team” or their “tournament team”. The Ontario LL site gives a good explanation about how tournament play works. www.llontario.ca GLL traditionally enters teams in Minor, Major, Junior and Senior Playdowns.  Tryouts for the tournament team take place in early June.  Please put the dates in your calendar – anyone wanting a spot on a team must be assessed and is expected to attend.

District competition against our fellow D6 teams begins in early to mid-July.  Provincials happen in mid-July followed by Nationals in August. Seniors start and finish earlier — districts begin during the last week of June with provincials in early July and Nationals mid-July.
Exact tournament start dates are only known after leagues commit to sending teams, the deadline for which is the end of May.  Tournament formats (ie: round-robin/double elimination) also depend on the number of teams.  Players trying out for the tournament team who are date sensitive should discuss with the coaching staff or league convenor.

The successful team then moves on to compete at the provincial level which involves traveling to the Ontario host city.   While the district contributes toward the cost of player and coach transportation to cities that are at a distance from Ottawa (Toronto, Windsor, Thunder Bay area), parents should be aware that much of the cost of attending provincial and national competition falls to them, primarily for accommodation and food.

Major, Intermediate, Junior and Senior teams will continue on to the Canadians (National level) should they win Provincials.  The path for the Major Division ultimately leads to the Little League World Series in Williamsport in August. Junior and Senior divisions ultimately lead to a World Series competition in the USA.  Minor teams do not have play beyond provincials.
